Be Prepared When Hiking! Every time!

Hiking Safety Tips

  1. Don’t hike alone – Yes, many people may want to hike alone to enjoy some peace and quiet, but if you get into trouble – you are all alone.
  2. Tell others where you’ll be and when you should be done – That way, if you should get lost, someone will be alerted soon after you are late and be able to tell authorities where you went.
  3. Bring a GPS device – even on well populated trails, there is often NO cell signal. Definitely bring a fully charged cell phone, but also have an alternate device to be able to track your GPS location, lead you back to safety, and send a SOS signal.
  4. Bring bear spray – this will protect you not only from animal wildlife, but from human predators as well.
  5. Bring a source for fire and water – water and fire can help you survive longer. Bring waterproof matches and a lighter to help you start a fire for warmth and to signal help. Also bring water bottles. Plus, there are many light and portable water filtering systems to allow you to drink water safely out in the wilderness.
  6. Bring a first aid kit – Injuries can spell doom for a lost hiker. Have the means to patch yourself up if you fall or get injured.
